Why I Became a Trustee

Martin Kyndt joined FitzRoy’s Board of Trustees in September 2018, armed with over 35 years of experience in the charity sector. We spoke to Martin about why he chose to become a trustee for FitzRoy and how it has benefited his life.

I joined FitzRoy’s Board last year and was delighted to become Chair of Trustees in January. After a career in international development working to provide poor, disadvantaged and marginalised communities in developing countries with the opportunities to empower and transform their own lives, I am hugely impressed and humbled by the impact of FitzRoy’s people-centred approach.

I am deeply inspired by the quality of the staff who embody the values of the organisation’s founder, Elizabeth FitzRoy, in their dedication and commitment to empower the people they support to realise their dreams and potential.

Martin’s career in the charity sector included senior positions working for SightSavers and Christian Aid. Martin continued to say how becoming a trustee has been ‘a fantastic opportunity’ for him.

It has been a huge privilege on my part to have joined such an organisation that is constantly challenging itself to improve the quality of its work in creative and innovative ways.

The Love4Life programme is a wonderful example of how FitzRoy provides creative opportunities for new friendships that truly transform lives.

I’ve always been hugely passionate about supporting people who are marginalised or excluded from society and I’ve been driven throughout my career to give people opportunities to be the best they can be and to live a life that fulfils their potential. The care and support that FitzRoy gives to adults with learning disabilities and autism chimes heavily with that.

All the Trustees care deeply and passionately about the work of FitzRoy and the staff that deliver it. We have enormous respect for the amazing work of the staff. Our job is to ensure that FitzRoy provides the best care it can for the people we support and that our staff are really supported to do their job well.

I am impressed by what FitzRoy has already achieved and I am excited by its potential to reach out, touch and transform even more lives. I am really enjoying my role and supporting the organisation.”
