Helping every voice be heard: Oliver McGowan mandatory training

At FitzRoy, everything we do comes back to the people we support. For over 60 years, we’ve stood alongside people with learning disabilities, autistic people, and those with mental health needs, supporting them to live the lives they choose. That’s why we’re proud to be an approved provider of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (Tier 2, Part 2 face-to-face), licensed by NHS England.

This training is more than a requirement. It’s about changing the way care is delivered, making sure that people’s voices are heard, respected, and understood.

Each of our sessions are led by a FitzRoy trainer alongside a co-facilitator with lived experience. Both bring their own expertise – one from professional practice, the other from personal experience – creating a powerful, balanced learning environment that helps staff understand not only what good support looks like, but also how it feels for the people receiving it.

By hearing directly from people with lived experience, participants gain real understanding of the barriers, challenges, and opportunities that autistic people and people with a learning disability encounter every day.

Why it matters for the people you support

When staff complete this training, the impact is seen in the everyday interactions where someone is treated with dignity, patience, and respect. It’s heard in the moments when a person is truly listened to, and their communication style is understood. And it’s felt in the confidence of families, knowing their loved ones are supported by people who not only have the right skills, but the right mindset.

We know that every organisation is different. That’s why we offer:

  • Bespoke group training, delivered at your workplace and tailored to your team.
  • Open courses, ideal for smaller organisations who need just a few spaces.

Oliver McGowan’s story is a powerful reminder of why this training exists: to make sure autistic people and people with learning disabilities receive safe, compassionate, and personalised care. At FitzRoy, we’re honoured to play our part in this mission, working with health and social care organisations to create a future where everyone is understood and supported.
