Boosting confidence and building connections
Last week, residents from our supported living services in Coventry and Birmingham all got together for a Dress to Impress summer ball, an event that brought together food, laughter, dancing and friendships.
Tracy, one of our Coventry service managers, said: “From the minute it was first announced, everyone was so excited. There was a real social buzz from the get-go, with everyone asking if there would be a competition for best dressed and planning their outfits. The excitement grew as they shopped for outfits in town, it all created such a lovely atmosphere.
“On the day of the ball, we transformed one of our rooms into a salon where we did everyone’s hair and makeup. One resident complimented another, telling her she looked stunning, and her face just beamed.”
Members of our service user forum Nationwide always tell us that we need to have more regional parties and socialising opportunities. They are keen to meet and make friends with people living in different places. The summer ball was a great chance for everyone to socialise, reconnect with old friends and meet new people. Plans are already in motion for a Christmas ball.
Harriet, who we support in Coventry, said: “Thank you for arranging it all, it was just wonderful. I loved it.” Another resident, Mark, shared how much he enjoyed himself and also thanked the staff for organising it.
Tracy said: “We have printed off photos for our scrapbook, which everyone is already excited to show off to their guests and visitors.
“At an event like this, you just see a really different side to everyone. They all let their guard down, enjoying themselves and connecting with people they probably never would’ve spoken to before. It was just really lovely to see new friendships blossoming.”
