Building inclusion together: introducing FitzRoy’s LGBTQ+ employee network

Published: December 19, 2025

A space to connect, listen and learn

This week we held the first meeting of FitzRoy’s LGBTQ+ employee network. Colleagues including LGBTQ+ staff and allies joined the session online – a powerful signal of shared commitment to inclusion, respect and learning.

The network has been created to offer a safe, supportive space for colleagues to connect, share experiences and help shape how FitzRoy continues to grow as an inclusive organisation.

What we talked about

During the session, colleagues joined breakout discussions to reflect on four key questions:

  • what has helped people feel included and supported at work
  • challenges or barriers experienced or witnessed
  • what could be done differently to foster a more inclusive culture
  • what colleagues, managers and support teams could better understand

Across the discussions, some clear themes emerged.

Not making assumptions – inclusion starts with everyday practice

Many colleagues spoke about the importance of not making assumptions – about identity, relationships, pronouns or experiences. This was strongly linked to FitzRoy’s commitment to being person-centred.

Just as we aim to see, hear and respect each person we support as an individual, colleagues shared how important it is to bring that same mindset to working with one another.

What our staff survey tells us

These conversations closely reflect what colleagues told us in our most recent staff survey.

  • 83% of colleagues said they feel able to be themselves at work
  • 87% agreed that FitzRoy values equality, diversity and inclusion
  • 83% said they feel treated with respect by colleagues
  • 83% feel confident speaking up or raising concerns

While these results are encouraging, feeling included is shaped by everyday interactions, not just policies or statements. The LGBTQ+ employee network is one way we are creating space to listen more deeply and continue improving.

Creating space for questions, conversations and learning

Another strong message from the network was the value of open, respectful conversations. Colleagues shared that inclusion is supported when people feel able to ask questions, raise uncertainties or seek understanding – without fear or judgement.

The network will help by signposting resources, sharing learning and creating opportunities for discussion, while recognising that everyone is at a different point in their understanding.

A network for support, visibility and change

The LGBTQ+ employee network is not just about discussion – it is about helping FitzRoy learn and improve. It will:

  • provide peer support and visibility
  • help surface barriers that might otherwise go unheard
  • share resources and guidance
  • inform wider work on inclusion, wellbeing and culture

This is an ongoing piece of work, shaped by colleagues and grounded in lived experience.

Looking ahead

The network will continue to meet regularly, welcoming LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies. As it develops, it will work alongside existing people, quality and inclusion initiatives to help ensure everyone at FitzRoy feels safe, respected and able to be themselves at work.
