FitzRoy Boldshaves in bloom

Published: March 24, 2017

Spring has officially sprung, especially for residents at FitzRoy Boldshaves Oast in Kent. They have been getting their garden ready for the season ahead.

The garden at Boldshaves isn’t any old garden either. They have their very own horticulture project on site complete with large poly tunnels stocked full of wonderful things. Justine May, Service Manager, told us more.

Now that spring is finally here, many of the residents are out enjoying the weather and the chance to get involved in their horticulture project.

We now have a lovely list of vegetables growing. We have tomatoes, purple broccoli, sweetcorn, celery, spinach, kale, courgettes, cucumbers, broad and runner beans, lettuce, and artichokes. We try go from ground to table as much as we possibly can here too. It’s lovely for everyone to grow their own food and eat it.

Tracy is our brilliant Head of Horticulture and teaches the guys all about sustainability. They can sow, prick out seedlings, and name all sorts of plants, vegetables, and weeds. They’re amazing and love their time in the garden. Tracy often does radio quizzes while they all work together and you can often hear howls of laughter from the tunnels.”

Boldshaves Oast not only grow their own vegetables and plants, they also sell them too. Justine said that this year they have focused on growing flowers for cutting, describing it as their ‘not in the garden centre’ range.
