Hannah’s inspiring transformation
38 year old Hannah was diagnosed with diabetes in 2021. Since moving in to our Banbury supported living service last year, she has lost weight and improved her health. Her progress has been so significant that she may be able to come off her diabetes medication at her next check-up.
Deputy manager Julie said, “Before Hannah moved to FitzRoy, she lived in a much busier home where she was unhappy. Although she had her own room, she had to share living areas with other people, which sometimes led to conflict.
“When we first met Hannah, we immediately recognised that she valued her independence. Hannah has her own self-contained flat, and we make sure she knows she has the freedom to make her own choices, and knows that it’s her space. We never impose anything on her. By giving her this space and support, Hannah is fully in control of her life and she is thriving. Now, with her own space and the freedom to make her own decisions, she feels much more settled, and her confidence is growing every day.
As her confidence increases, Hannah has been working hard to lose weight and improve her health. “At Hannah’s most recent diabetes check-up, they were over the moon with her and the progress she’d made with her health and weight loss. Because of the progress she’s making they believe she’ll be able to come off her medication by her next appointment, which is a massive achievement for Hannah.
“Hannah’s success is due to her own self-discipline and determination. We’ve been here to support her when she needed us, but the real difference was that we ensured that she had the freedom to do things her way and in her own time.
“When Hannah realised we were not imposing her choices on her, and she was in control, she felt motivated to pursue her health goals because she wanted to, not because anyone was pushing her to. She understands it’s the best thing for her, and our team has been there to positively encourage her and cheer her on every step of the way. We make sure to celebrate each of her achievements and remind her of the progress she’s made and how proud she should be.
“Since losing weight, Hannah has become more active. Before, she was nervous about falling, but now walks around her flat and uses her exercise machine most days, steadily building her confidence.
“Hannah struggles with anxiety, so despite her progress, she can be hard on herself sometimes. She doesn’t always see how far she’s come. On low days, we remind her of everything she’s achieved and positively reinforcing the progress she’s made.”
Reflecting on her journey, Hannah said, “I’ve lost some weight which is really good news, and I’ve been staying active around my flat, using my exercise machine and walking around my kitchen. It’s tough sometimes when I don’t feel motivated, but I always try to keep going because I know I’ll get there in the end.”
Julie said, “We couldn’t be prouder of Hannah. Seeing her take control of her life and make decisions that are best for her and which better her life is truly inspiring. Her determination and self-discipline are remarkable, and it’s wonderful to see her thriving, even through the tough days.”
