Lewis conquers the dentist’s chair

Published: June 6, 2025

Lewis has recently made great progress with something that’s been really challenging for so many people – going to the dentist. Even walking through the door was overwhelming for him.

With support from Mark, his support worker at On Track day service, Lewis has gradually built up the confidence to get through the door, sit in the chair, and even let the dentist take a look – a big step forward that’s been a long time in the making.

Over time, Mark has really got to know Lewis, and built a strong, supportive relationship with him. With a calm, steady approach, he began accompanying Lewis to the local dentist each week. At first, they’d simply walk up to the door, step inside briefly, and then leave. Each visit brought a small but meaningful step forward. On the second visit, Lewis was more confident walking in, and by the third, he managed to sit in the waiting area for a short time.

Thanks to a wonderful mix of Lewis’ determination, Mark’s support and the understanding of the community dentist team, Lewis has now reached a major milestone: sitting in the dentist’s chair and allowing the dentist to look into his mouth for the first time.

This has not only made a real difference for Lewis at the dentist but also in all areas of his life. His increased confidence is helping him face new challenges as they come.

Maria, Activities Coordinator at On Track, said:

Mark has been working with Lewis and the community dentist team in Petersfield each week to make it possible for Lewis to feel safe and comfortable to enter the dentist and go for regular check-ups. It gives me great delight to say that Lewis’ progress has come on each week, resulting in him sitting in the chair and allowing the dentist to look in his mouth.

This is what social care looks like.
