When we met Patrick last summer, he told us he wanted to get a job. Fast forward to now, he’s one month into his new role volunteering at a local charity shop.

Patrick has done some voluntary work previously and he knew he wanted to do something like that again. His new home was just a short walk away from the town centre which opened up so many new opportunities for him.

30-year-old Patrick lives at one of our Coventry supported living homes where we support him day to day with household tasks, budgeting, cooking meals and other support. In his spare time Patrick likes to DJ, often appearing at birthday parties and get-togethers – he would love to be able to DJ at a larger venue one day.

Patrick’s support team spotted a sign asking for volunteers at a local charity shop and thought this could be the perfect opportunity for Patrick. The team supported him to apply for the role online and he was offered an interview. They helped him to prepare for his interview, going over practice questions with him and support worker Leo went along with him for support on the day. He obviously did a great job as he was offered the role straight away.

Originally the role was for one day a week but after Patrick’s first day at the beginning of January he was offered an extra day. So now he works there two days every week.

Patrick said: “It’s really good. I enjoy working behind the till.”

Home manager, Tracy, said: “I’m so pleased for him. The job has given him something extra to look forward to and he seems happier, especially on the days he’s working.

Being able to walk there and back is another thing he’s really enjoying. He doesn’t need staff to go with him, so it’s already given him so much more independence too. Not just that but his confidence too. It’s a great opportunity for him to meet so many new people.

“On the day of his interview he was texting me about how nervous he was feeling and that he was glad it was done and couldn’t wait to hear back, and almost instantly he was then offered the job! We couldn’t be happier for him!”
