Phillip leads the way with Oliver McGowan Training
Following the introduction of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism, all health and social care staff are now required to complete training led by people with lived experience.
At FitzRoy, we knew the people we support could play a vital role in helping colleagues understand what good support really looks like – and Phillip was one of the first to step forward.

After completing his own training, he is now an accredited co-trainer, delivering sessions to FitzRoy staff across the Midlands – and he’s already set his sights on taking the course to other parts of the country and continuing to make a difference through his work.
Phillip brings warmth, humour and confidence to every session, sharing his experiences in a way that helps others see things from his perspective. His sessions give delegates a genuine insight into life with a learning disability and give Phillip the opportunity to use his skills in paid work he’s proud of.
Phillip is not fazed by an audience and will easily command a room thanks to his natural showmanship. Not only is he an excellent co-trainer, but he is also an outstanding ambassador for the training programme and FitzRoy as a whole.
Phillip said:
I really enjoy doing the training and being part of the team. I think all the hard work is good for me and I’m really impressed with the job. Getting lunch afterward is a bonus too! It’s really good.
