Team FitzRoy take on Manchester’s Big Fun Run 2018
People who attend Trafford Day and Community Service ran, walked and wheeled their way around the 5K Big Fun Run in Manchester, joined by their friends and FitzRoy staff.
This year Trafford day service wanted to do something that the people we support could get involved in, following the fundraising success of last year’s Dragon Boat Race. The FitzRoy fun run team included 15 people supported by the service, and seven staff and friends that volunteered their time to join them.
A huge congratulations to Grace, who finished first out of Team FitzRoy. Grace is a wheelchair user, so she had assistance from support workers Charlotte and Kat to get around the course and they managed it in under 40 minutes. Andy, who is also a wheelchair user, passed the finish line shortly afterwards with the support of Ramsey Bayati, Deputy Manager. Andy, who lives at The Coppice, one of FitzRoy’s residential services, has been attending Trafford day service for over 20 years.
Ramsey Bayati, Deputy Manager at Trafford Day and Community Service, said:
Everyone did amazingly well. Despite being overcast, it was deceptively warm, so the run was pretty hard work. Some ran, some walked, some wheeled and some even skipped around the course. There was a wonderful, welcoming atmosphere at the event. It was a great opportunity for us to do something fun together and we all really enjoyed ourselves.
The team have so far raised an impressive £750 in sponsorship. They’re hoping to put the money towards providing a wider range of activities at the service including craft materials, sensory equipment and instruments for the music room.
Fitzroy Trafford supports around 50 people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and sensory impairments living in South Manchester. If you’d like to make a donation visit the team’s Just Giving Page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/fitzroytraffordbigfunrun
