Afternoon: Autism
Build the essential knowledge and skills your team needs to provide confident, person-centred support with a learning disability or autism. This is the face to face component of Oliver McGowan Tier 2 Part 1 training and it requires completion of the Tier 2 eLearning modules before attending.
Limited Spaces: Maximum of 25 delegates per session – book early to secure your spot.
Important: All delegates must submit certificate proof of Part 1 eLearning completion at least one week before the event to guarantee entry. There will be no refunds for delegates refused entry for not submitting Part 1 certificates.

Who is it run by?
The training is co-delivered by three NHS England–approved FitzRoy trainers, a facilitating trainer, an expert by lived experience with a learning disability and an expert by lived experience who is autistic.
Who is it for?
This mandatory course is designed for any team member in a registered service who supports autistic people or people with a learning disability.
The training will enable learners to:
- Acknowledge and understand unconscious biases to avoid diagnostic overshadowing
- Acknowledge and understand the learnings from the Learning from Lives and Deaths reviews (LeDeR) including co-morbidities
- Stop the overmedication of people with a learning disability (STOMP and STAMP campaigns)
- Understand what reasonable adjustments are and how to make them – review The Equality Act 2010
- Understand when to use The Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Understand when to use and how to apply ‘do not attempt cardiovascular resuscitation’ (DNACPR)
- Improve communication with a person with a learning disability (and their family)
- Recognise the important role hospital passports and annual health checks play in the care and support of people with a learning disability
- Enhance learners’ understanding of autism, best practice in health and social care settings and understand how this is supported by current legislation.
The training will enable learners to:
- Understand why autism is described as an invisible condition
- Reflect on your own values and beliefs
- Recognise potential differences, strengths and challenges for autistic people
- Identify potential triggers for anxiety
- Identify reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt your practice
- Be familiar with legislation and resources for inclusive enabling service
