Aidan, a FitzRoy support worker in Newhaven, has signed up for a skydive. The only thing is, he’s not sure why. We spoke to Aidan to find out why he chose to jump out of a plane for FitzRoy.
“I don’t like flying, I can’t stand heights and I’ve never even considered jumping out of a plane. So I have no idea why I’ve chosen to do a skydive to raise money for FitzRoy. I was just doing some admin at work and saw the link on our intranet. Next thing I know I’ve signed up for a tandem jump.
“In my spare time I perform stand up comedy around the UK, so I could have done a show instead. I could’ve safely stood on a stage. That does not scare me. People often say, ‘Oh I couldn’t stand in front of all those people, it’s so brave’. It isn’t brave. Being a firefighter is brave. Jumping is much scarier as at no time doing comedy have I fallen from 10,000ft strapped to a stranger while reaching speeds up to 120 miles an hour. Yet on 21 June in Salisbury, I shall be doing just that.
“I’m pretty sure it’s not a mid-life crisis. I’m happily married and have never even wanted a sports car or to date someone half my age. We recently needed a new car and so I bought one that was perfect for me. It’s a Renault Twingo. What I’m saying is that I’ve never seen myself as a Tom Cruise type – unless the next Mission Impossible film features Tom sitting on a sofa for it’s duration. Adventure is not my middle name. It’s Cornelius.
“So why am I doing it? Well the answer is simple. It’s the same reason why anyone works at FitzRoy. It’s because we care about the people we support and if I can raise a little money to help them a bit more then it’s worth it.
“We’d love for the money to go towards our pond project. We have a pond area with fish but we want to convert it into a sensory garden so that all our residents can have a lovely relaxing space to enjoy the sunshine.”
