First steps to a new career

Published: October 14, 2022

Peter has lived at Shuttle Street, one of our supported living services in Coventry, for nine years now and for all that time he has volunteered in the kitchen at Gosford Community Hub Day Service.

Peter loves being in the kitchen and decided that he’d really like to get a part-time job in catering.

The team at Shuttle Street talked Peter through his options and then supported him to fill out an application and take part in an online interview with the Coventry Adult Education service. He’s now doing a Level 1 course in catering. Peter started the course earlier this year and attends lessons two days a week with the aim of being able to get a job once he finishes his course next year.

His housemates at Shuttle Street have also benefitted from Peter’s love of cooking as he’s been practicing his recipes and kitchen skills at home. Every Monday he bakes cakes or cookies for everyone. He looks through his recipe books and decides what to bake and then goes to buy the ingredients with his support worker.

Peter is always looking for opportunities to bake – he and his housemates are gearing up for a Halloween party where he plans to bake some spooky cakes. Peter also wants to make a Christmas cake to take to his twin brother and his family in Nottingham for the holidays.

Service manager Tracy said:

“Peter is very independent; he goes out to college or The Hub every day on his own. He loves walking and walks everywhere everyday unless it’s bad weather. He has a Fitbit and likes to tell staff how many steps he’s done each day.

Going to his course is great for him and he really enjoys it. Once he’s done, we’ll do everything we can to support him finding a job.
