Keiran’s next step – cooking, cycling and supporting others
When we last spoke to Keiran, he had recently moved into his own flat at FitzRoy’s young people’s transition service in Didcot. After years of round-the-clock support, he was enjoying more freedom and beginning to build a life that felt like his own. “I’m where I want to be,” he told us. “They don’t bug you but they’re there when you need them.”
A year on, Keiran has continued to build his independence – discovering a passion for cooking, travelling independently and using his skills to help others.
When Keiran was first invited to volunteer and join a cooking group, he was interested but unsure whether it was right for him. New places, unfamiliar people and changes to his routine could make him anxious so taking the first step wasn’t easy but he chose to give it a try.
The team supported him to move at his own pace. When worries or setbacks made things more difficult they gave him the space and reassurance he needed without taking over.
Keiran’s confidence grew as he became more familiar with the group. He learned new recipes, developed practical skills and discovered how much he enjoyed cooking.
Before long, he was no longer only learning from others but also sharing his skills with fellow volunteers, helping them in the kitchen and encouraging them to try things for themselves.
The freedom to get there himself
Keiran then set himself another goal – travelling to the group on his own.
Rather than relying on someone else for transport, he got a bike and began cycling there by himself. The journey gave him more than a way to get from one place to another, it gave him greater freedom and the confidence that comes from knowing he could do it for himself.
Keiran has now completed a four-week cooking programme and is looking ahead to what he would like to do next.
Deputy Manager Kevin said:
It has been amazing to see Keiran grow in confidence over the last few months. The biggest difference has been seeing him believe in himself. He has found something he really enjoys, become more independent and started using his skills to encourage other people.
Support that prepares people for what comes next
Our transition service supports young adults to develop the skills and confidence they need for greater independence. That means understanding what matters to each person, giving them room to try things and providing the right support when they need it.
For Keiran, moving into his own flat was an important step but it was only the beginning. By trying something new, persevering when it felt difficult and setting his own goals, he is continuing to shape the life he wants. That is what Living My Life is about – having opportunities to discover what matters to you and the right support to take your next step.
