Support Worker – Hayling Island
ApplyThis isn’t a standard care job. It’s about getting to know the people who live here—their personalities, their routines, what makes them laugh, what helps them feel safe, and what matters most to them.
It’s about building genuine relationships, sharing everyday moments, encouraging independence, and helping two young men in their 20s live lives that are full of choice, purpose, and the experiences many of us enjoy.
Every day will look a little different because every day is shaped around the people you support, not a task list. If you enjoy making a genuine difference, encouraging independence, and supporting people to live the lives they choose, we’d love to hear from you.
Unfortunately we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role.
Please note, you will require your own transport, as you will be required to shadow current support staff in Southampton until Daniel moves to Hayling Island, you will be paid travel time and mileage.
- Day shift: £13 per hour weekdays and £14.30 weekends.
- Waking Nights: £13.39 per hour weekdays and £14.73 weekends.
- Enhanced rates for overtime.
- 37.5 hours per week.
- Time and a half or double time for public holidays.
- 30 days holiday when you start.
- A full UK driving licence is preferred for this role as you will be taking part in activities in the community.
Meet Daniel
Daniel enjoys making the most of his local community. He loves going for walks, heading out for a drive, visiting the park or the beach, going to the pub for food, browsing local shops, spending time in the garden, and trampolining.
Daniel thrives in calm, quiet environments and enjoys spending time with people who are relaxed, encouraging, and positive. He benefits from support to develop his confidence and everyday life skills, while being encouraged to make choices and live life on his own terms.
To support Daniel well, you’ll need to understand his sensory processing difficulties, primarily presented as noise sensitivity, and how this is influenced and impacted by his environment. Daniel communicates through his behaviours; for example, if he squeezes your hand, he may be trying to tell you he wants something or is experiencing pain. Your role is to utilise alternative communication methods to understand, reassure, and respond with patience and empathy.
Meet Craig
Craig is a young man who enjoys being active. He likes walking to the shops, visiting McDonald’s, and going for runs. Building trust and taking time to understand him are key to helping Craig live the life he wants.
Craig communicates using limited verbal language and processes information at his own pace, so patience and giving him plenty of time are essential. Some days he may need encouragement to get out of bed, eat, or take part in activities, but with the right support and positive relationships, he can enjoy meaningful experiences in his community.
Craig can experience periods of distress, which may result in self-harm or damage to his environment. Remaining calm, planning ahead, and understanding what matters to him are vital parts of the role.
About the Role
You’ll support Daniel and Craig to:
• Enjoy the activities they love.
• Build confidence and independence.
• Develop everyday living skills.
• Receive support with personal care, medication, meals, and household tasks through.
• Feel safe, valued, and connected to their community.
Some days can be challenging, so we’re looking for someone who is calm, resilient, patient, and able to build positive relationships. Experience supporting people with autism, learning disabilities, mental health needs, or behaviours of concern is beneficial but not essential, as full training will be provided.
Shift Pattern
• Mixture of 8-hour and 12-hour day shifts between 7am and 10pm and Waking Night shift, starting at 8pm or 10pm.
• Full-time hours available.
Weekend working is essential, when you work the weekend you will have days off in the week.
If you believe great support is about relationships rather than routines, and you want to help people live gloriously ordinary lives, we’d love to hear from you.
