Photography is James’ biggest passion, and after setting himself the goal of one day sharing sharing his work online, James has set up his first photography blog.
We spoke to James, who is a member of our Norfolk day service The Maltings, about what he loves about photography and where his inspiration comes from.
James said: “I have been interested in photography for ages. I like to take pictures of things I see when I am outside on my walks, it relaxes me and I like to share those photos with other people.
“I had the idea for setting up the blog because it is something I wanted to do for a long time.
When I created my blog I wanted to show everyone at The Maltings straight away, they say they like the pictures I take and they are proud of me.
“I come to The Maltings on a Wednesday and a Thursday and I like to get the bus to places where I can go for nice walks and take photos, then on days the weather isn’t as nice I sit down and upload them.”
Support worker Sara has been supporting James with his blog. She said: “When James told me about his blog I said what a great idea it was and asked if could I help him in any way. That day we came up with his blog name, ‘J. H. Photography’ and I took some headshots for his profile.
“James has been really excited to share his work on his blog, and he’s loved having something to focus on. This week I showed James how to use hashtags to help him build up his following. It’s so nice to see him happy and focused on something that he enjoys and I’m really proud of him.”
Service manager Kerensa said: “At The Maltings, we base all of our activities around what our members want to do. We don’t make any of the day to day decisions, it is fully member led. James loves photography so we will hold photography sessions with him and support him to go on walks where he can take photos.
James has always wanted to set up a photography blog, it is something he has been interested in for years. When he finally told us that he had done it we were all so proud, he’s achieved a goal he has set for himself.
“Supporting our members to do the things they love and achieve goals they set themselves is exactly what we do at FitzRoy.”
After being closed for lockdown, The Maltings has reopened to some members, with all members planning to return on 21 June.
James said: “When The Maltings was closed in lockdown I really missed socialising. My favourite thing about being back is the walks we go on.”
Kerensa said: “Everyone loves being back, staff and our members. We have had to welcome members back in phases, but hopefully by the summer we can see everyone return. Our members have adjusted really well and they have all enjoyed getting involved with the activities they love again, such as gardening, and we have also been holding independent life skills workshops which has been a success.
“We can’t wait to get things back to normal so we can support even more members to achieve their goals like James.”
