Phillip uses his experience to help others learn

Phillip is one of FitzRoy’s accredited Oliver McGowan co trainers, delivering training to health and social care staff.

He brings his own experience of having a learning disability into the training room, helping participants think about communication, support and what it feels like when people listen and get things right.

Phillip has delivered sessions to FitzRoy colleagues across the Midlands and enjoys being part of the training team.

Becoming a co trainer has also given Phillip an opportunity to use his experience and skills in paid work.

As part of Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, people with lived experience work alongside trainers to help participants understand the issues being discussed from a personal perspective. Phillip’s contribution gives people the chance to hear directly about what good support can look and feel like in practice.

He hopes to continue delivering training in other parts of the country.

“I really enjoy doing the training and being part of the team. I think all the hard work is good for me and I’m really impressed with the job. Getting lunch afterwards is a bonus too! It’s really good.”
